The Oakland Museum of California honors el Día de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead, with an annual community celebration. For over 30 years the OMCA's Día de los Muertos Committee has mounted exhibits and created space for the community to celebrate this traditional day of remembrance.
In 2019 the Fruitvale History Project created an altar to remember the history of activism and struggle of the Fruitvale community. The altar included works of art that reflected that history as well as photos and text that remembered activists who have since passed. Their commitment and love for community were highlighted and honored in our exhibit.
Much of the artwork and photos were from the personal collections of members of the Fruitvale History Project, including original artwork by one of its founding members, Elizabeth Meza.
