El Espíritu de Fruitvale: Malaquías Montoya
The Fruitvale History Project (FHP) partnered with the EastSide Arts Alliance (ESAA) to present El Espiritu de Fruitvale, a multimedia project exploring Oakland's Chicano Movement through the art of Malaquías Montoya. The project featured a two-month long exhibit of posters by Malaquías at ESAA's studio in Oakland accompanied by video clips produced by the FHP. The exhibited posters depicted the work of organizations in the Fruitvale as well as the social struggles that took place there during the 1960's-1980's.
ESAA and FHP also presented live panels of artists and activists discussing the role of the arts in social movements and the history of community organizing in the Fruitvale District of Oakland.
In addition to moderating and participating in the panels, Fruitvale History Project members authored the essays that were included in the book that accompanied the exhibit. The exhibit, events and publication were a well-deserved tribute to Malaquías Montoya and his work.
El Fruitvale History Project (FHP) se colaboró con la EastSide Arts Alliance (ESAA) para presentar El Espíritu de Fruitvale, un proyecto multimedia que explora el movimiento chicano de Oakland a través del arte de Malaquías Montoya. El proyecto consistió en una exposición de dos meses de carteles de Malaquías en el estudio de ESAA en Oakland, acompañados de videoclips producidos por el FHP. Los carteles expuestos mostraban el trabajo de las organizaciones de Fruitvale, así como las luchas sociales que tuvieron lugar allí entre los años 1960 y 1980.
ESAA y FHP también presentaron paneles en directo de artistas y activistas que debatían el papel de las artes en los movimientos sociales y la historia de la organización comunitaria en el distrito de Fruitvale de Oakland.
